Alec finds the first white hair on a thursday. Honestly he's susprised that this moment hadn't come sooner, he had been expecting it for a while and Izzy had always joked that he would get his young.
Instead, Alec is almost fifty and all in all he thinks he put up a good fight.
"What are you looking at, Darling?" Magnus asks from the other room and Alec looks back at his own reflection and shrugs.
"Nothing too important," he lies.
They have two kids who need to get ready for school and a very busy day ahead of them, he doesn't have the time to think about this.
He still thinks about it, and that night, while he is in his office, Alec comes to a decision.
Izzy is sprawled on the couch, flipping through a report and he looks at her and decides this is the only thing he can do.
"Izzy," he calls her, "I'm stepping down."
She stops, almost freezes in action, and looks up at him startled. She's thinking, trying to understand what has happened, if Alec is going crazy, but he just smiles at her.
"What?" she asks, and he shrugs.
Alec understands her shock, the position of leader of the institute was always his dream and he has enjoyed every moment, even the bad ones. This is the job he had trained for, the life he had always wanted.
When he was a teenager.
Alec is almost fifty now and his priority have changed.
"I found my first white hair today. And it made me think," he explains, with a smile. "I want to stay with my family more. And this job... you don't need me here."
"Of course we do," Izzy immediately says, "Alec with you at the helm the institute has been better than ever and..."
"Yeah, but I want to do this for myself," he tells her and this shuts her up. He knows that whatever Izzy might feel, she will always support him when he decides to do something for himself.
It's why he loves her so much.
"Also, I've already found a replacement. You'll like her, she's thought," he jokes, sending her a smile and a wink.
"I could say no..." Izzy says, but there is a softness in her voice that tells him all he needs to know. "You're not that old, you know," she continues, getting up and reaching his side, "you still have a lot of years ahead of you."
"Yeah, I know, but how many of those am I going to spend in here?" he asks her, looking around. "And as many as they are, Magnus will have many more without me, I just... I want him to remember some of them with me at his side, not with me closed in this study."
She looks around too, at the sterile room that helds none of Alec's personality. It was never what he needed, this job, just something he thought he desperately wanted.
"I'm proud of you," Izzy says, out of the blue, "and I'm saying it as your sister and your boss."
Alec laughs at her and kisses her temple. "I'll still be here, just maybe a little bit less."
She shakes her head and ruffles his hair. "Go back home to your husband. You've done more than enough here."
When he goes back home, that night, it's a lot earlier than usual. He sees the way Magnus' eyes shine with happyness and then worry.
"Are you all right? Why are you home?" he asks, walking towards him, "not that I don't find it delightful, Alexander, but it's usually never a good sign."
Alec smiles and shakes his head, "Don't worry about it, I'm where I should be."
